Looking for a chance to talk with an alum? Have you wondered what it was like at Chicago in the '60s, '70s, '80s, or '90s? Do you want to learn from people who have taken that special Chicago approach to their lives and careers? Drop by the Alumni House at 56th and Woodlawn. Visiting and local alumni can now connect with students and other alumni as well as participate in life on the Quads more easily from this location near campus.
The stately three-story English Tudor limestone structure was built in 1922 for Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and designed by Howard Van Doren Shaw, a preferred Chicago architect of the day. McCormick Theological Seminary, which has moved to new quarters north of 55th Street, was the most recent occupant.
On the first floor, you'll find a library stocked with books by alumni authors, where visiting grads can spend time catching up with each other or just relaxing. Recent events held in the library include the Trustee Speaker Series, the Hot Chocolate Social in January for first-years, and receptions for student leader award nominees and fourth-years.
There is also a large conference room and a small business center with phone, fax, and Internet access. The second floor houses the Alumni Association staff offices. Other occupants of the building are UChicagoTech, the University's technology-transfer group, and the Telefund (the student calling center).
