Looking for a chance to talk with an alum? Have you wondered what it was like at Chicago in the '60s, '70s, '80s, or '90s? Do you want to learn from people who have taken that special Chicago approach to their lives and careers? Drop by the Alumni House at 56th and Woodlawn. Visiting and local alumni can now connect with students and other alumni as well as participate in life on the Quads more easily from this location near campus.
The stately three-story English Tudor limestone structure was built in 1922 for Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and designed by Howard Van Doren Shaw, a preferred Chicago architect of the day. McCormick Theological Seminary, which has moved to new quarters north of 55th Street, was the most recent occupant.
The University of Chicago Alumni House is a warm and welcoming spot for alumni and other visitors to meet, relax, or find information. On the first floor, you’ll find the Klowden Family Library, stocked with University memorabilia, yearbooks, and a large selection of books by alumni authors. Recent events held in the library include the Hot Chocolate Social in January for first-years and receptions for student leader award nominees. With a large conference room and Wi-Fi access throughout the building, the Alumni House is home for a number of Alumni Relations and Development staff as well as the Student Telefund operations. And during Alumni Weekend each June, it’s the stepping-off point for registration, information, and meeting up with friends.
