They include second-, third-, and fourth-year undergraduates, graduate students, and post-docs.

Rooms are singles with high ceilings, large windows, central light, ceiling fan, campus telephone service, self-controlled radiant heat, fresh-air ventilation system, newly tiled floors, and modular furniture, including a bed, dresser, large bookcase, desk, chair, side desk, book hutch, and wardrobe.

No meal plan is required to live at I-House. Cook your own meals in the well-equipped community kitchen or purchase snacks and light meals in the Tiffin Café.

The exceptional community spaces at I-House include the elegant main lounge with grand piano, library, and outdoor courtyard. Additional amenities include the kitchen, dining room, computer labs, laundry room, private study rooms, music practice rooms, mail service, and 24-hour security. Housing fellowships are available; living terms are convenient, particularly for study-abroad students. Yearly and quarterly contracts are available.

For information on the residential House system for undergraduates, see Student Life, Living on Campus.

Off-campus housing

There are plenty of privately owned apartments for rent in the Hyde Park area. Check with local realtors, look on bulletin boards, and surf the Net to find out what's available. If you're in the market to buy, look for realtors in the phone book. Some of the larger apartment buildings and property management companies in the area are listed on this page.

If you're having trouble with your landlord, you can go to the City of Chicago Web site at www.cityofchicago.org and click on "Home and Property" to review the landlord/tenant ordinance and find other helpful information.
