Setting up phone service
If you live on campus, service comes from the University through your room-and-board fees. These fees cover a phone in every dorm room that you can use to call emergency services and any other phone on campus. Depending on your registration status, Networking Services and Information Technologies (NSIT) will provide you with an authorization code so you can make local or long-distance calls from your room. If you are eligible, you can claim your code at cmore.uchicago.edu. The University will bill you (through the bursar) for the cost of your calls. You'll be charged for calls at the University's internal business rates, which are very competitive. The current rate is 3 cents per minute for local calls and 3 cents per minute for domestic long distance, but it is subject to change without notice. If you want to use another long-distance provider, use the calling card provided by the carrier of your choice.
If you live off campus, you can claim your NSIT authorization code, which will allow you to make local and long-distance calls while on campus, by visiting cmore.uchicago.edu.
Finding phone numbers and more
If you're looking for people, various directories are available from the "Directories" link on the University's central Web page.
Instructions for changing your own directory information are in the Connectivity Package documentation or on the relevant directory Web page.
Online resources:
- Faculty/Staff Online Directory: campus-directory.uchicago.edu
- LDAP Directory: https://cnet.uchicago.edu/directory/ldapsearch.cgi/
- Authorization code request: cmore.uchicago.edu
-
Voicemail request: nsit.uchicago.edu/vdn/studentservices/
Hard copy is available in dormitories and other offices, or from Networking Services and Information Technologies (NSIT).

Dialing on-campus numbers
If you're using an on-campus phone to call a University number, don't worry about the first two numbers—you only need to dial five numbers. So if you need to make an appointment with your College adviser, for instance, just dial 2-8615 instead of 702-8615. This user's guide lists all the on-campus phone numbers that way, so you don't have to guess whether or not they fall into the five-figure category. If you're calling from off-campus, however, you will have to dial all seven numbers. Here's a translation of the abbreviations:
2-XXXX = 702-XXXX
3-XXXX = 753-XXXX
4-XXXX = 834-XXXX
If you're calling from off campus, you'll have to dial all the numbers. The area code is 773 unless otherwise indicated.
