If you invent something or write software that has commercial value while you are a student, you should have a conversation with the people at UChicagoTech (tech.uchicago.edu). They are expert in intellectual property issues and in the relevant University policies and can help you understand and document your rights. The Office of University Research Administration (URA) helps inform researchers—including students—about the rules and responsibilities that apply to the conduct of research at the University, although your main resources will be the faculty members with whom you work and the Student Manual of University Policies and Procedures.
